Vancouver, ON, — Canada’s first drug manufacturer to make a new version of a prescription drug for erectile dysfunction (ED) without a prescription, will begin distributing its new drug, Viagra Connect, on Friday.
The first product from its Canadian subsidiary, Biotest, will come as the company makes the first oral ED drug,, which is not in the same class as Viagra.
“For men looking for a reliable solution for ED, we’ve developed a new drug that’s proven to be very effective,” said David Krennan, Biotest’s chief executive officer.
Biotest has a team of 20 medical professionals who have been working on the drug since it was first approved in the United States in 2003. The company has received FDA approval in Canada for a generic version, Cialis, but also has received approval for the original version in Europe.
The new product, called sildenafil, works by increasing blood flow to the penis, and it was designed to be taken orally and is not available over the counter.
The new drug will cost about $30 for a one-month supply, which makes it a more affordable option than the older version, Cialis, which has more to offer men.
In the United States, sildenafil is approved for men 18 and older who have erectile dysfunction and are seeking treatment. Viagra Connect will be available in pharmacies in all 50 states.

Biotest also said that men in the United States, including those seeking treatment for ED, shouldn’t use the drug to obtain medical treatment. Viagra Connect is not a medication for those who are trying to treat a specific disease or condition, Krennan said.
“For men looking to get the best results with ED, Viagra Connect is a great option,” Krennan said. “This is a brand-name drug and we’re excited to begin distributing it to men in Canada.”
Cialis, which was designed to be taken orally, is a prescription-only drug that is not available over the counter in Canada.
